Sing, Unburied, Sing is a deeply moving book, rich in atmosphere and filled with all too human and flawed characters that will stay with you long after reading it – some of them you will love to hate, and some you will hate to begin loving, despite their painful flaws. Jojo, the thirteen-year-old boy who is caught up in the family drama and forced by his circumstances to mature beyond his years, is a particularly endearing character that will crawl into your heart forever.
This kind of book only comes along every few years, and will probably be hailed as one of the greatest American novels ever written in time to come. Toni Morrison and William Faulkner are names that could easily be mentioned in the same sentence as Jesmyn Ward, as her craftmanship is astonishing. It’s a very layered story that can be read on many levels – either just for its captivating story and beautiful, almost poetic imagery, or it can take you to deeper into its many underlying universal themes.
It’s not a beach read, and will be best enjoyed making the time to really sit and immerse yourself. You will end the last page an enriched reader with a greater understanding of humanity and the world we live in. You will want to keep it on your shelf, and you will think twice to lend it out in fear of not getting it back.
