Fitness Routine

When did you start exercising /how /why?

I’ve always been active. I started ballet when I was only 4 years old and carried on till I was 16. During high school, I swam for the varsity team and played hockey and I think this foundation has made being active an integral part of my life – just like eating, socializing and sleeping.

What’s your weekly routine?

I aim for 3-4 workouts every week on average but this can go down to 2 per week when things get really hectic and up to 5 or 6 when I’m trying to really get in shape – usually just before holiday season! I love yoga and that is a constant but I always mix things up to include cardio and weight training as well.

Do you exercise alone or in group?

In a group, always! I used to exercise alone but now that things have gotten so busy, group classes are the perfect way to see my friends so I end up looking forward to the workouts even more. I also find that classes motivate me to work harder because giving up or walking out isn’t really an option.

What are your top songs to keep you motivated?

Sadly we don’t get to pick the music in classes. But if I had to pick, I love songs with attitude and bass for weight training (like Formation by Beyoncé) and some really good house music for running (like Sky and Sand from Paul Kalkbrenner or a set from Jan Blomqvist).

How did you change your eating habits?

I’ve always tried to make healthier food choices but of recent, I have been working with a nutritionist who has helped me in understanding portion sizes and macronutrients. Since then, I’ve consciously been reducing my sugar and carb intake and increasing my protein and veggies.

How did it change your life?

In general when I’m eating well and working out, I have energy and feel good about myself. You feel a sense of accomplishment from being able to see the progress in your fitness levels, and as your body gets stronger, so does your sense of confidence which spills out into your everyday live. I’ve always been active but there have been times I had a few months away from the gym for various reasons, and I felt so tired and stressed during those periods!

Tips

  • 1. Working out and taking care of your body is the best thing you can do for yourself, and it shouldn’t be considered optional. It’s never too late to find some activity that works for you.
  • 2. Change it up, have fun with it and don’t be disappointed if you don’t see results immediately or miss a few sessions, the important thing is to keep going – you WILL see results and your body will thank you for it.
  • 3. Be moderate – build a sustainable routine that enables you to still work, socialize and enjoy yourself – it’s all about creating a healthy balance. Too much, too soon will only lead to burn out.
  • 4. Invest in cute gym gear! Working out does not mean you have to look like a bum.
