What if your work is so important to you that - on your deathbed - you find yourself wishing for another extra day at work? My father passed away while I was writing this book, and in the months preceding his death, I had time to reminisce with him and talk about the most important moments in his life, including his job. My father was in the banking business, and at the height of his career he was the head of mergers and acquisitions at the Federal Savings and Loan Insurance Corporation, which then merged with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, and during the savings and loan crisis in the 1980s, he ran a team that was a target From its formation, the amalgamation of banks in deteriorating conditions with banks capable of repaying debts; So that taxpayers do not have to bear all the costs, if the savings and loan crisis intensifies. My father would put a flipchart in his office to keep track of how much money his department had saved for US taxpayers. He updated this schedule daily, and shared his data with everyone who entered his office. Financial experts estimated that billions of dollars were saved by my father and his team for taxpayers. The stakes were high, the work was hard, but his team was passionate about work; Because its members knew that his role was important. We've all heard the old saying: No one wishes on their deathbed to spend an extra day at work. I think we misunderstand this adage; It underestimates the role that purposeful work plays in our lives; A 2005 study of patients with chronic cancer revealed that when patients finish talking about their families, what they then talk about as some of the most meaningful experiences in their lives is doing important work with people they care about. This study reflects my experience with my father, who loved his family and, by today's standards, spent much more time with his children than most men now spend with their children; He changed diapers, played our gym coach, did home projects, went on camping trips with us, and even learned how to score in gymnastics to help my high school team. But he also loved his job; When my father fell ill, reading the compliments of his former colleagues was a wonderful moment for him. He also liked to talk about the good times and the bad, the obstacles they faced in his work, the deals that went well, and the deals that didn't. My father was full of pride when he talked about his team, and the impact he had on the banking system. It is easy to say that family is the most important thing, but watching my father reflect on his life made me see clearly that work is very important. We spend most of the hours we are awake at work; So these hours should mean something. Viktor Frankl once said, “Life never becomes unbearable because of circumstances, but only because you have no meaning or purpose.” People are made to think about purpose, and once an individual has food, shelter, air, and water, he or she has two basic requirements: communication and meaning; We want to make a difference, we want something that makes our lives valuable, and this psychological need transcends gender, race, age, and culture. If we do not meet this basic need, we die first emotionally, then physically. Unfortunately, many view their work as devoid of any lofty purpose; they see it as a mill; An endless series of missions that don't make any sense.
