Dr. Al-Kawari is a Deputy Prime Minister and State Minister. He is the current President of the Qatar National Library and was previously Qatar's Minister of Culture, Arts, and Heritage (2008-2016). He formerly served as Qatar's ambassador to France, the United States, the UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization, and the United Nations. In 2017, Dr. Al-Kawari ran for the position of Director-General of UNESCO. He won the first four rounds and received 28 votes against 30 for the French candidate in the fifth.
